Hon'ble Governor of Meghalaya
Shri Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar, born on 21st October 1956 in Makanoor, Haveri district, Karnataka, is a distinguished Indian politician who currently serves as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya. Appointed to this prestigious position by the Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on 30th July 2024, his career has spanned over several decades, marked by his dedication to public service and his significant contributions to both state and national politics. His political journey began in the early 1990s when he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Hunsur constituency in 1994. This was a critical juncture in his career, as it marked the beginning of his rise in Karnataka’s political landscape. His tenure as an MLA from Hunsur reflected his strong connection with the people of the region, and he soon became known for his commitment to rural development and his efforts to address the issues faced by his constituency.
In 1998, he made his entry into national politics when he was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha, representing the Mysore Parliamentary constituency. This was a significant achievement, as it allowed him to broaden his impact beyond the state level and contribute to the national discourse. The year 2004 was a landmark in his political career. He was re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha, once again representing the Mysore constituency. What made this victory particularly notable was his triumph over the royal scion, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, a member of the erstwhile Mysore royal family. This electoral win not only solidified his position in Karnataka’s political landscape but also demonstrated his ability to take on formidable opponents and emerge victorious.
His political career continued to flourish as he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council, where he served as a member from 2010 to 2016. This period was marked by his appointment as the Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment in the Government of Karnataka from 2009 to 2011. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s environmental policies and promoting sustainable development. His tenure as a minister was characterized by his efforts to strike a balance between development and environmental conservation, ensuring that Karnataka’s ecological resources were preserved while promoting economic growth.
